Since 2007, the Tampa Bay Rebels have built strong relationships with teams in the Liga Nacional de Basquetbol Profesional (LNBP), Mexico’s best pro league. “Back then, the team was known as the Tampa Bay Shark; we started sending players south of the border and developed a reputation for fielding a team with reliable players and athletes,” Rebels GM Fernando Rojas said.
Rojas was invited to spend a recent weekend with the coaching staff of Pioneros de Quintana Roo, one of the best teams not only in the LNBP, but in all of Latin America. Pioneros coaching staff is headed by the former coach of the Puerto Rico National team, Manolo Cintron, and their associate coach is former Phoenix Suns player Horacio Llamas (pictured above).
“Pioneros is a model organization in many regards. They have a great coaching staff and experienced professionals from Mexico, Argentina and Chile managing the club’s community programs and youth basketball development. The club was interested in the Rebels’ scouting and recruiting system. I sincerely appreciate the invitation to share basketball ideas with one of the best clubs I have known, and I look forward to doing bigger and better things together,” Rojas commented.
