Blue Sharks Support Local Leagues

The Blue Sharks entered their third year of operation by winning the Martin Luther King Tournament early in 2017. Immediately after that, the team joined the Tampa City league, and by midyear the Blue Sharks had made an impressive run in the annual Bay Area Showdown tournament. All these events were organized and sponsored by Bay Area Basketball Inc.

To finish off the 2017 season the “Tiburones Azules” traveled across the bridge to join for the first time the UBA Pro-Am in Saint Petersburg. Tampa Bay Rebels GM Fernando Rojas said, “The quality of the Blue Sharks program took a giant leap forward this year. We are playing close to forty games in the season and for the first time we had players from other countries that flew to Tampa just to play for us in the summer. This year we have given more players the opportunity to play organized basketball. With the return of the Tampa Bay Rebels in 2018 and the Blue Sharks program in full swing, we look forward to a great summer of high-level basketball in the city.”

Blue Shark Headed to European Basketball

Blue Sharks swingman Xavier Owens had a brief but very productive two months as a member of the Blue Sharks. During that time, he participated in weekly scrimmages, team meetings, and was an important part of the MLK Tournament Championship. Owens can effectively defend tall guards and small power forwards, and, with his ball handling ability, he creates scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates. Coach Rojas commented “Xavier’s ability to play several positions is an asset for any coach. He is very coachable and knows how to communicate with the coaching staff. These personal skills along with his basketball IQ will help him succeed in his basketball journey.” Owens will soon travel to Hungary to play in their professional league.

Blue Sharks Win MLK Tourney

In 2016, the Blue Sharks reached the MLK Tournament Championship game only to fall short by four points. This year, Coach Brown had his team ready to play right out of the gate. Throughout the tournament, the Blue Sharks had wins with less than one second on the clock and two outstanding games against a very smart and capable Polk team. In the championship game, the Blue Sharks came out on top against Polk 60 – 56.

Blue Sharks Head Coach Jon Brown said after the contest, “We were focused and determined to play both ends of the floor. Polk was a difficult opponent with experienced players. I think our bench made the difference - we just wore them out.” The Blue Sharks is the developmental team of the Tampa Bay Rebels. The purpose of the Blue Sharks is to give more players the opportunity to learn and play at a high level. Rebels GM Fernando Rojas commented after the contest, “This is the Blue Sharks second year of operation, and the team did a great job over the weekend finishing the tournament undefeated with a 5 – 0 record. This group has a very positive chemistry mix, and they enjoy playing as a team. Coach Brown, in particular, did a great job managing the roster throughout the entire tournament.”
